Discover the Belgian 50’s designers Elli Kruithof & Raymond Goovaerts

Partners in life and in work…

They were active in graphic art, painting, architecture and design. By this multitude of disciplines one should call them the Ray & Charles Eames of the Flanders at that time. As pioneers of modernism in Flanders they were befriended with Leon Stijnen, Renaat Braem, Jack Sels and many others in the artistic scene of Antwerp.

The Flandia 16 boat “La Pérouse” interior project put the couple entirely on the design map. This 1951 project was a colorful, most modern, playful and classy entity. The restaurant received many prominent guests, several kings, vips, like the shah of Iran, etc. and was awarded in 1953 with a second michelin star.

Most furniture was made by Loral & Straatman, a company that originally made carchairs, but more and more executed projects of Leon Stijnen, like chairs, cupboards, barstools.
