Description
Designed in 1986 by visionary theatre director and artist Robert Wilson, the Hamletmachine Chair emerged from the radical avant-garde energy of his stage production Hamletmachine (1985), based on Heiner Müller’s postmodern reimagining of Shakespeare. Wilson, known for his stark visual language and sculptural approach to theatre, translated his scenographic intensity into this striking chair.
At once minimalist and theatrical, the Hamletmachine Chair is both an object and a performance. Its high back and geometric silhouette evoke the throne of a shattered kingdom — a distilled symbol of power, isolation, and introspection. Manufactured by XO France, the chair is more than a piece of furniture; it is a sculptural artifact of late 20th-century experimental design, occupying a liminal space between art and function.
