Tom Emerson brutalist prototype concept chair Bauhaus Dessau

Concept chair designed by a young Tom Emerson for a contest organized by the Bauhaus Dessau foundation. The assignment was to design public furniture with waste material found in the east part of Germany just after the fall of the wall.
Tom retrieved these heavy black solid pieces of rubber. They were originally used as shock reducers in buildings between the floors. The two pieces of solid wood have a smooth finish and great patine. A set of 12 chairs was made and one table. Exhibited in a Brussels Gallery mid eighties.
